Celebrating food independence

With 70 delicious pounds of berries in the freezer, we decided we needed a reward.

Earlier today, we replanted 50% of the bush beans, which fell victim to the slugs during the damp weather of the past week. This time, we fought back by protecting each future seedling with a plastic party cup. I don’t know if it will work, but it is cheaper than slug-be-gone, which dissolves in the slug’s favorite damp weather. I replanted cucumbers, too, and covered those with milk jug tops.

We are still eating lettuce, chard, and chives and onion tops, but that’s about it from the garden just now. Soon, though, we’ll have new potatoes. I planted them May 12, and they are just beginning to flower now. I’m drooling in anticipation.

I love the blue cup touch! Great idea but don’t the slugs climb the sides? They do on all the pots in a nursery. Try diocetameos earth (that word is NOT spelled right … sorry) it will dry them out and needs to be wet to stick to the leaves of the plants. By the way your inlaid stone path and patio are wonderful. Nice design work.
