Today, we picked up the lumber and conduit needed to construct a small hoop house.
We have yet to order the plastic but figure we won’t be needing it for a while, anyway; we do need to get the house set up so that I can plant the tomatoes and peppers I have started for the beds there.
Our plans call for an 8’x16′ house, with 81 square feet of growing space which includes a small area for a table and 2 chairs for ‘winter therapy’ in the garden. Thus far, we’ve spent $79 on lumber and conduit, etc. Details will follow.

Are you using a set of plans for your hoop house? Or are you using your own design? I’d like to make one, but I’m a bit nervous about just winging it.

Laura,
There are tons of sites describing hoop houses, and I’ve read a lot of them (just Google PVC hoop house or conduit hoop house) but we are basically following Robin’s design at Season’s Eatings Farm http://seasonseatingsfarm.wordpress.com and tweaking it to suit our site. She wrote an article about it here http://www.farm-garden.com/marketfarmer/quick_simple_hoop_house which I’d bookmarked ages before finding her blog. But keep reading and learn from our experience, I’m happy to share!

Yayyayayayyayyay!
You will LOVE the way the place smells in January. That alone should cure all that ails you, winter-wise. Have fun!

Ali — best of luck on this great project — I’ll be looking forward to your updates (even if I mostly lurk through them).

Oooh! I can’t wait to see the building process. Are you excited, or what??
