Sunny January Sunday

Today was the warmest and sunniest day we’ve had in quite some time here at Henbogle — the temperature climbed to 28°F; 54°F in the hoophouse.

It was a good day to refresh girls’ food and water, give some treats, take out the compost, img_3526refill the birdfeeders, etc.

I peeked under the row covers in the hoophouse.  With a low of -1°F last week, things aren’t looking too pretty.  The plants are still alive, but looking limp and insipid.  I hope as the

img_3527 days grow longer, they will begin to perk up a bit.  For now, it looks like we won’t be eating from the hoophouse until March if we are lucky.  Instead, I will concentrate on planning for early spring crops.  I’ll start some seeds inside, and prepare some beds in the hoophouse for seeding toward the end of the month.

54 in the hoop house? For real? That settles it, I must have a hoop house next year. Got any building tips for me?

Claire, the hoop house is very do-able. The most difficult part is determining where, the most expensive part is the plastic.

I have a tutorial of sorts on construction. Look at the top right under details. I’ll add more as we make roll -up sides this spring.
