Happy Birthday, Maine!

Today, 180 years ago, Maine ditched Massachusetts to become an independent state.  We’ve been going our own way ever since!

The state motto, Dirigo*, means I lead.  In the legislative resolution leading to the adoption of the seal, there is some explanation of the motto:

“…as the Polar Star has been considered the mariner’s guide and director in conducting the ship over the pathless ocean to the desired haven, and as the center of magnetic attraction; as it has been figuratively used to denote the point, to which all affections turn, and as it is here intended to represent the State, it may be considered the citizens’ guide, and the object to which the patriot’s best exertions should be directed”.

*Dirigo Pronunciation: (dē’ri-gō”; Eng. dir’i-gō”)

Happy birthday to us, indeed! Do you bake anything special to celebrate Maine’s birthday? I wonder if there is such a thing as a “Maine” cake. Would blueberries be involved?

Laurie, what a great idea! I think a blueberry cake would be just the thing. I know a great old recipe for one too, I just need to dig it out of the memory bank.

You ditched us!!! Well I never! :>

And Happy Birthday Maine. It is a beautiful state even if you could have still been Massachusetts.
