Prepping for the laminate

We outsourced the laminate install to a local cabinetmaker, but promised to do the prep work ourselves.  Tonight we removed the despised double sink and scuffed up the existing laminate with 50 grit sandpaper.  Oddly, we discovered it was easier to scuff up the counter by hand, not with the palm sander.  I don’t know why.

The ugly blue of the sink cabinet interior was the color of the kitchen when we bought the house.  Yurg.

Tomorrow, the laminate goes on, and Friday and or Saturday, we install the sink and faucet.

Lastly, we will cover up this hideous tile backsplash.  Wish us luck!

Good luck! It looks like you’re well prepared and it should all go smoothly :)

We had a combo of really bad tile when we moved in (50’s grey marbled plastic on one wall–70s brownish ceramic on the other). Changing out the back-splash made such a huge difference!

I didn’t realize you all were in the throws of a kitchen remodel. We’re just getting started on ours and discovering all sorts of horrendous “surprises” as we begin to tear in to it. Interesting about doing your own laminate. Are you happy with the procedure and results? If you had to do it over, would you still do it the same way?

I can’t wait to see you cover up the tile backsplash. I hate mine so much, but I don’t know what to do about it! I am really impressed that you can laminate over existing laminate. HMMM! I feel a new project in the making!!! :)
