The peepers sing, therefore ’tis spring

Vegetable garden, almost clear of snow

Finally, last night, the peppers awoke, and sang.  Spring is here!  We heard them on April 10, 2008, April 7, 2009, and last year, very early on March 20.  Their awakening was the perfect ending to a beautiful spring weekend.  The sun and warm weather really melted a lot of the remaining snow.

The warm, sunny and gentle breezes proved to be good weather for cleaning out the ornamental garden beds.  With trying to finish up our siding project and the new

Deck bed, before

front door last fall, we didn’t get the flower beds cut back and raked before the snow, meaning we had quite a bit of cleanup to do now.

We cleaned up the deck bed, the holly bed, the shade garden, and the driveway beds this weekend, with the cutting garden still to go.  We took two truckloads of the rakings to the town compost pile.  The beds now look great, with a few plants beginning to poke up through the soil.  The crocuses are blooming, and the tulips are on their

Amazingly, the lawn is beginning to green up.  We are due for rain showers

Monday, which will no doubt result in a big green-up and a surge of plant growth.  I hope it also results in the disappearance of the remaining snow.  The hens are becoming quite impatient with the snow in their yard.  Me, too.

If you have Peepers already by this weekend we should have them on MDI. Yea! Spring is really happening even if there is still a lot of snow on the garden.

I hope for yours (and the hens) sake that the rains come and do their magic to remove the rest of the snow and infuse some grow energy into all those nicely cleaned up garden beds! We have had nothing but rain it seems this spring but got a brief break for a few days – long enough to dry the lawn out and do the first mowing (it was very shaggy) and add some lime and fertilizer to it before the next batch of rains came in. I still have the flower bed clean up to do – hopefully next weekend I can get to it.

Happy Spring! I wish I heard peepers but I don’t seem to have them here.

I heard them this week for the first time as well. Yes, it is a sure sign of spring. Now if only the temperatures would warm up.
