Windjammer days

Tuesday Dan and I were fortunate to be guests on some friends’ scallop dragger turned pleasure boat for a cruise off of Boothbay Harbor at the beginning of Windjammer Days.  We cruised out to Linekin Bay where the schooners were anchored for the evening.  Our Captain, Terri, by day a ferry boat captain, cruised amidst the ships and gave us a chance to ohh and ahh over them, as well as over a large naval vessel visiting for the event.

We had a great time.  Photos are below.

Glad that is not still dragging for scallops. When I was a little girl, I watched boats like that drag our cove for a couple of days. That was probably sixty years ago, and the scallops have never come back, because dragging rips out the seaweed they need to live and leaves the sea floor a wasteland. How anyone could do that for a living and look themselves in the mirror, I do not know.

Yes Maine has long winters and short summers but it also has the best sailing waters. It’s been over 10 years since I was on a Windjammer and I’m ready to go back.
